February 2017 – President’s Message

A message from Gord Kruger, Evergreen Club President

Greetings Everyone….Well, we are already into the second month of 2017 and all is full speed ahead at the Filberg Centre….with any luck at all, we may have left winter behind. One of the things I quite often speak of is how fortunate we are to have the facilities we enjoy every day here at the Evergreen. The City of Courtenay provides rooms in this wonderful building to us at no cost. We in turn run a great organization here called the Evergreen Club. We get to elect our own board and that board in turn manages the club in a way that hopefully is to your liking. It is here at the Evergreen that friendships and social ties are made and where our members come together to participate and enjoy those friendships through our many varied activities. In the most simplest terms, it’s a Great Organization in a Great Spot.

The reason I am saying this is because I am somewhat troubled by the false rumors and negative innuendo that I’ve been hearing as of late. Things like….”things are going to change”…..”the city’s going to take us over”…… “we are going to lose our building”…….amongst others. I’m here to tell you that none of these are true. Yes, there have been some changes, but these are like all changes in our lifetime….time passes, some things change, and we carry on.

There will be some upcoming changes in governance soon and that is only because the Provincial Government passed a new “Society Act” into law and it became effective recently. The CRA, which we are part of, must become compliant with the new act. I, as your President have been attending a series of meetings over the past few weeks to stay abreast of proceedings and I assure you that I have the clubs best interests at heart. Once all the requirements to meet compliance have been met we should see little if any change in the day to day operations of the Evergreen Club. However it will be necessary to delay our 2017 AGM until this process is complete. I have asked Janet to add an article to this newsletter to further explain what I have said… will find that within. Hopefully this will clear the air a little and provide some peace of mind.

If you have further questions feel free to bring them up with Janet or I and we will do our best to provide answers. Executive meetings will continue with the same executive extended until we have our 2017 AGM.

A reminder to all the club reps….the February Executive Meeting and Committee meeting will be held on the first Monday in February….that’s February 6th….this is due to the second Monday being a “Family Day” long weekend.

Don’t forget to check the newsletter for all the great upcoming events and happenings at the Evergreen……it’s your club so enjoy it. Adios for now…..gk
